ODC Mini Adventure Race

On the morning of Sunday 25th October there will be a mini, fun race down at the boat shed.

The race will be of a similar format to the Anaconda race. Solos or relay teams will take part in paddling, cycling and running. Each leg will be not more than an hour in length ie total race time approx 3 hours. You do not need your own boat; we will be using the UWA Spirt Cross Trainer surf skis.

Relay teams can be 2 or 3 people ie one person does more than one leg.

The entry fee will be minimal – enough to pay for a BBQ afterwards. The race will be open to non ODC members but at a slightly higher rate (still very cheap).

This race will be ideal for people who want a good training session before Anaconda, those who don’t want to pay high entry fees nor drive for hours but still want a fun hit out and anyone else who fancies taking some reasonable exercise in a relaxed environment.

More details and a web page showing distances, course etc to follow. Just book it in your diary for now.

Summer is for Sea Kayaking

Exciting news! A new summer of sea kayaking is here! An with it comes the opportunity for loads of training, leading to some exciting trips and hopefully some longer expeditions. Last year was a week in Shark Bay, other years have seen paddling in a fjord in Norway, along the Ningaloo Reef, and with seals in New Zealand! What is next years trip going to be? It all depends on where people want to go and how we get our skills up as a group. Sea kayaking is extraordinarily rewarding, and it also requires special skills and a knowledge of risk assessment and trip planning to do it safely. Over the coming months we will be focussing on skill development for all. This will be through both club training and external training opportunities.

Prerequisites

Firstly, if you are interested in gaining skills and experience in sea kayaking, please start with our flatwater skills training in Matilda bay. I would highly recommend achieving F2 level prior to moving into the sea kayak levels. In some cases F2 level will be a requirement for introductory club day trips and training sessions (If you don’t know what I am talking about, check out our website for skill levels). Also, please please please consider helping out with logistics by purchasing roof racks if you are in a position to do so. The main challenge with organising trips is transporting kayaks. In many cases places on trips will be limited, and preference will go to people who a) organise trips and b) have cars with roof racks.

Training-club Saturday the 8th

The first one will be run by myself and Brad, and from there we will hopefully get fortnightly sessions (on the alternating week to sessions run by Les) which will be coordinated by participants. This session will (probably) be run in Shoalwater bay in Rockingham from 9am to 12. It will be limited to six club boats plus people with own boats. You must reply to me with your skill level (F2 or nearly F2 please) and transport situation (and must be current club member) if you would like to come. For the first session we will probably have a trailer for transporting the SKs, so please let me know if you are willing and able to tow this. Cost: $5 for club boats and gear plus transport costs.
Please don't forget to put $5 in the club mail box in the WSC any time you take a kayak away from matilda bay. This money goes straight back into providing quality gear for you to use.

Training-External Sunday 9th

Les Allen is a sea kayak instructor qualified through Australian Canoeing, and will be running regular sessions throughout summer. The level of instruction is excellent and I highly recommend these sessions! More info and contact details at:

http://www.wozwebs.net/westcoastkayaks/

I will send out a flyer with full details, but in general there will be three sessions on Sunday, with:

Basic Training 8.30am (Basic sea skills) Next level up 10.30am (More technical)More Practice 12.30 (general skill development)

Cost: $20 for Les, $5 for club boats and gear

Club boats will be available (I think we have six sea kayaks), but these will need to be booked through the paddling officer odc.paddling@gmail.com (Mohamed). You will need to be self sufficient for these sessions in terms of organising and transport.

Zoe.

Great Southern Adventure Race

Last weekend the two day Great Southern Adventure Race was held in Albany. Sveral current and past ODC members took part.

Everything about this race was huge. The distances involved (200km of mountain biking, 55km of running and two epic ocean paddles, the whales sighted on the first paddle, the waves at Taylor Inlet, the climbs in the Porongurup National Park, the abseil at Castle Rock, the wind and rain drops on the pre-dawn paddle on Sunday, the pace to make cut offs, the effort put in by teams (and support crews) and the amazing sense of satisfaction of finishing.

Click here to read more about my race.

New Committee

Another AGM has come and gone for the club, with a whirlwind of paddling, BBQ's and catching up. Thanks to everyone who helped out, especially Nari for organising it. Thanks also to all the outgoing committee for all their work, especially Nari for all the work she's put in as president, and Maria for her tireless work as Treasurer.

So, to the new committee - thanks to everyone who volunteered, here are the positions for the record:

Climbing: David Wyndham
Paddling: Mohamad Jaafar
Adventure Racing: Jake Hannah
Windsurfing:
Hiking:
Mountain Biking:

Internet Officer: Joel Day
Social Officer:
Student Representative:
Equipment Officer:
General Committee Members:

President: Brendan Douglas
Vice President: Chris Donnelly
Treasurer: David Wicaksono
Secretary:

You'll notice there's a few spots still open, so if you're keen to influence the future direction of the club, and have a lot of fun in the process, but just couldn't make it to the AGM, it's not too late!

Tom's kindly volunteered for the secretary spot, but we're still short of people for all the best jobs!
Being on the committee is a great chance to give something back to the club, and a good excuse / motivation to go out on some more trips. It really consists of whatever you make of it - there's no requirement to be forever organising trips, it's more a matter of letting people know what's happening. If you'd like to know more about the positions, just email the previous person (email addresses are on the website). Otherwise if you see a spot you'd like, or I missed you out in the above list, just let me know.

Meanwhile, the days are getting longer, the weather is warming up, so see you out there!

Brendan.
ODC President.
